Superman & Lois – First Thoughts

Superman & Lois

I have watched the pilot episode of Superman & Lois and I am thoroughly impressed. I actually liked Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of Superman in Supergirl but this takes things to a new level.

In many ways, this didn’t feel like a CW show. It didn’t have any of the campiness that usually goes a long with that style. Instead, it had more of a feeling of a movie.

I don’t know if all the budget went into the pilot, but the special effects were way beyond the previous CW shows. Time will tell.

In some ways it is surprising that this show works.

On one hand, this feels like the old Superman. While I really liked the Henry Cavill Superman, Hoechlin’s feels more like the Superman I grew up on. There is both a nobility and humility to the character. In that way, it draws on nostalgia.

On the other hand, this feels like a new Superman. This is not Clark trying to protect his secret identity from Lois. This is Clark and Lois married with teenage sons.

As a dad of a son around their age, I really enjoyed this aspect. Their characters are three dimensional and are worth getting to know. Add to that the mystery of how their Kryptonian heritage will affect them and there is plenty of potential.

The pilot was more story-driven than action-driven, but there were still some great fight scenes. Superman & Lois have the potential to breathe new life into the CW superhero universe.

If I have one criticism, it is the lack of clarity of how this fits with the events in Supergirl. Is this the same Superman? We know that a number of the Superman characters that appeared in Supergirl have been recast. Superman’s costume from Supergirl doesn’t appear in the flash backs.

Is this a Superman from a different universe? The ending for the first episode does suggest the multiverse is at play. I hope that it is explained eventually and that the relationship between the two shows is not just ignored.
