Christians Be Cautious…
It is very important to know that Yoga, by its very definition, involves spiritualism and mysticism. So, Christians beware of Yoga in its true form! Has a friend or family member ever recommended Yoga or have you ever thought about doing Yoga? Before you conclude that Yoga does not conflict with your Christian faith, I would ask that you do some research for yourself. Please watch this video link of a debate on whether or not Christians should practice Yoga.
The Definition Of Yoga…
First of all, let’s examine what the definition of Yoga is. Yoga is a Hindu system of philosophy aiming at the mystical union of the self with a supreme being in a state of complete awareness and tranquility through certain physical and mental exercises.
The Claimed Benefits Of Yoga…
Now then, I’m sure you have heard about the benefits of Yoga. Such benefits as…
- Lowering blood pressure
- Reduce insomnia. Yoga can it
- Increased flexibility
- Increase muscle strength and tone
- improved respiration, energy and vitality and weight reduction.
- Improve cardio and circulatory health
- Reduce back pains and body aches.
Beware Of Yoga’s Core Pillars…
Please do not get me wrong, I believe that the physical stretching aspect of Yoga is not harmful to our faith. But just keep in mind that the Lord commands us against practicing any type of spiritualism and mysticism…check out these passages from Scripture! So therefore, beware of Yoga in its true form! The clearing of one’s mind to get in touch with one’s inner spirit and to reach enlightenment with a so-called, “supreme being” is not what Jesus Christ, the Creator and Savior, teaches us. He teaches us to abide in Him, not to abide in ourselves. To meditate on Him and His Word.
Fact, Not Opinion!…Yoga Is Rooted In False Religion…
Besides, why would any true Christian want to incorporate the practices of a false religion? We should find all of the fulfillment we need in Jesus Christ, God incarnate, The Creator and Savior! I assure you that He is the only way to true peace and fulfillment. I assure you that Yoga, with a capital “Y” (Yoga in its true essence) brings about a temporary and false sense of peace which does not align with our Christian faith.
To Conclude…Should Christians Partake In Yoga In Its True Essence?…
I would be willing to bet that – at this point – some of you are thinking to yourselves, “What’s the big deal!?” “It’s Meditation, it can only be beneficial to us, right?” Again, my response to that is for you to do your own research on what true Yoga is and decide for yourselves. I will conclude with this, I believe that “yoga” with a small “y”, which only incorporates the physical stretching aspect and omits the spiritual / mental aspect, would not pose any harm to a Christian’s faith. Just be cautious as it may be easier than you think to get sucked into the spiritual aspect of Yoga, particularly when participating in Yoga classes that do incorporate the true essence of Yoga…with a Capital “Y”.
God bless you all!
“All honor and glory and praise to my King, The Light of the world, my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
